Laser welding joins metal with a focused pulse of light instead of a torch flame, so heat stays confined to a spot smaller than a pinhead. That matters when a repair sits close to something a flame would destroy: an emerald with oil-filled fractures, an opal, a strung pearl, an enamelled antique, or a hollow chain that would collapse under sustained heat. It is the technique that allows repairs to happen with the stones still in the piece.

Specific questions about laser welding — what it costs, when it's needed, and what we do differently.
- Is a laser weld as strong as a soldered joint?
- For most repairs it is stronger, because the weld fuses the parent metals directly rather than bridging them with a lower-melting solder alloy. On very high-load joints we still specify solder, and we tell you which we used.
- Which stones genuinely require laser welding?
- Emerald, opal, pearl, tanzanite, most treated sapphires and rubies, and anything with a fracture-fill or diffusion treatment. Heat from a torch can craze, cloud, or permanently discolour these.
- Can you laser-weld platinum and silver as well as gold?
- Yes. Platinum welds cleanly and holds colour; silver's reflectivity needs a different pulse profile, which our welders are calibrated for.
