Retipping rebuilds the small claw of metal that folds over a stone and physically holds it in the setting. Prongs wear from the outside in — a decade of contact with fabric and countertops thins the tip until it flattens or snaps. You need retipping when a prong catches on clothing, looks flat rather than rounded, or when a stone rocks under a fingernail. It is the single cheapest repair that prevents the most expensive loss.
$5–$12 per prong, so a standard four-prong solitaire head sits at the low end of a repair invoice.

- How do I know a prong needs retipping and not a full rebuild?
- If the tip is thin but the prong body is still full height, retipping adds metal to the tip only. If the prong is worn along its length or has broken at the base, it is rebuilt from the gallery up — the same visit, a different scope.
- Does the stone have to come out?
- Usually not. Laser welding lets our setters add metal millimetres from the girdle without heating the stone, which is why emeralds, opals, and treated sapphires can be retipped in place.
- How often should prongs be checked?
- Every six to twelve months for a daily-worn engagement ring. Retipping four worn prongs costs a fraction of replacing a lost centre stone.
