Porosity is trapped gas from the casting process — microscopic voids that surface as pinholes when a piece is polished. Cracks are the structural version, usually running through a shank, bridge, or gallery where the section is thinnest. You need this repair when dark pinpoints reappear after every polish, when a hairline shows under magnification, or when a cast piece has flexed and split. Left alone, a hairline in a shank becomes a full break, usually while the piece is being worn.

- Why do pinholes keep coming back after polishing?
- Because polishing only opens the next layer of the same void. The fix is to drill out the porous pocket, laser-fill it with matched alloy, and then refinish — otherwise it returns at every service.
- Is a cracked shank worth repairing or should it be replaced?
- If the crack is isolated and the surrounding metal is full thickness, a welded repair is sound. If the shank has thinned overall, replacement is the better long-term outcome and we will say so in the quote.
- Can you tell whether it was a manufacturing fault or wear?
- Usually yes. We map the fracture under magnification and flag the likely root cause, which is what warranty programmes need in order to decide who carries the cost.
