The head is the setting that grips the centre stone; the shank is the band that goes around the finger. Both are consumables on a ring worn for decades. Replacement is the right call when prongs have been retipped so many times the head has lost its geometry, or when a shank has worn so thin at the base that sizing it would be unsafe. Replacing the component costs less than the stone it protects, and it resets the wear clock on the piece.

- How thin is too thin for a ring shank?
- As a working rule, once the base has worn to roughly half its original thickness it should be replaced rather than sized. A half-shank replacement is the usual remedy and is invisible once finished.
- Can I change the head style at the same time?
- Yes — moving from four prongs to six, or adding a basket or halo, is commonly done during replacement. The stone is re-set and the ring re-sized to the wearer in the same job.
- Will a replacement head match the original ring?
- We match alloy, colour, and profile from stock where possible and hand-fabricate to the original spec where stock will not do, so the join is not visible at retail lighting.
