Gold vs. Platinum Ring Repair Cost: 14k, 18k and Platinum Compared (2026)

Platinum ring repair costs more than gold — typically starting around $150 for a resize versus $60–$180 for gold — because platinum does not flow like gold and requires high-heat laser welding rather than conventional torch soldering (RJS 2026 cost guide). Between 14k and 18k gold the price gap is much smaller and comes mostly from the metal added, not the labour: 18k contains more fine gold per gram, so any repair that adds material costs more.

2026 repair cost by metal

Repair 14k gold 18k gold Platinum
Ring resizing $60–$180 $60–$180 (higher within range — more gold added) $150+
Prong retipping $5–$12 per prong $5–$12 per prong Upper end of range
Chain / clasp solder $40–$90 $40–$90 Laser weld, +20–30%
Rhodium plating $60–$120 (white gold) $60–$120 (white gold) Not required
Laser welding surcharge +20–30% vs. soldering +20–30% Standard method

Why platinum costs more to repair

Platinum's working temperature is far above gold's. It doesn't flow the way gold solder does, so a bench jeweler can't simply heat a joint and let filler run into it. Platinum work is normally laser welded: a focused, extremely localized weld that joins the metal without heating the whole piece.

That has three cost consequences:

  1. Equipment. Laser welding requires a machine most small shops don't own — which is one reason many local jewelers send platinum work out.
  2. Time. Laser welds are made in many small passes rather than one solder joint.
  3. Finishing. Platinum is dense and work-hardens; the finishing and polishing stage takes longer than on gold.

The upside is that laser welding is safer around stones. Because the heat is confined to a tiny zone, work can be done near heat-sensitive stones — emeralds, opals, pearls, some treated stones — that a torch would destroy.

14k vs 18k: what actually changes

  • Metal cost. 18k is 75% fine gold; 14k is 58.3%. Any repair that adds gold — sizing up, rebuilding a shank, replacing a head — costs more in 18k in direct proportion.
  • Hardness and wear. 14k is harder and more wear-resistant. 18k is softer, richer in colour, and tends to need prong maintenance sooner.
  • Colour matching. Solder must match both karat and colour. An 18k rose or green gold repair needs matched solder; a mismatch shows as a visible line after polishing. This is skill, not surcharge — but it's the main reason mismatched repairs look wrong.
  • Sizing down is usually cheaper than sizing up in any karat, because no metal is added.

White gold: the rhodium factor

White gold is yellow gold alloyed white and then plated with rhodium. Any repair that involves heat and polishing removes plating in the worked area, so a white gold repair is normally quoted with re-plating included or as a line item — $60–$120 depending on piece size and prep. If a quote for white gold repair doesn't mention rhodium, ask; otherwise the piece comes back with a visible yellowish patch where the work was done. Full detail in our rhodium plating guide.

Platinum needs no plating. It is naturally white all the way through, which is why platinum pieces develop a soft patina rather than a colour change.

What drives your quote up, regardless of metal

  • Stones in the work zone — requires laser welding, protective measures, and usually stone tightening afterwards at $10–$25 per stone
  • Sizing up more than one or two sizes — more metal, more finishing
  • Engraving, milgrain or pavé near the repair — must be rebuilt to match
  • Rush turnaround — typically adds 50–100%
  • Antique or hand-fabricated construction — no standard parts to work from

Frequently asked questions

How much does gold ring repair cost — 14k vs 18k vs platinum?

Gold resizing typically runs $60–$180 and platinum resizing starts around $150. Between 14k and 18k the labour is similar; 18k sits higher within the range because it contains more fine gold, so any repair that adds metal costs more. Platinum's premium comes from requiring high-heat laser welding rather than torch soldering.

How much does it cost to resize a platinum ring?

Platinum resizing starts around $150 in 2026 and rises with the number of sizes, the presence of stones, and any milgrain or engraving that must be rebuilt. The cost reflects laser welding plus the longer finishing time platinum requires.

Is platinum harder to repair than gold?

It requires different equipment and more time, not more difficulty in the abstract. Platinum's high working temperature means it is laser welded rather than soldered, and its density makes finishing slower. Many local jewelers send platinum work out because they don't own a laser welder.

Will a repair on my 18k ring be visible?

Not if the solder is matched to both the karat and the colour of the alloy. A mismatched solder line becomes visible after polishing, particularly on rose and green golds. Ask your repairer whether they carry matched solder for your alloy before approving the work.

Does white gold need re-plating after a repair?

Yes. Heat and polishing remove rhodium plating in the worked area, so white gold repairs should be quoted with re-plating included or listed separately at $60–$120. Platinum never needs plating.
